Where do we get the phrase “rule of thumb”?

In the centuries before the invention of the thermometer, brewers would test the temperature of their brews prior to adding yeast by sticking in their thumb. Too cold, and the yeast wouldn’t grow. Too hot, and the yeast would die. From this practice, we get the phrase “rule of thumb”.
